Guiding Question: What did Okonkwo’s compound look like and how did it
reflect the culture of the Ibo people?

Format: Draw a picture of Okonkwo’s compound including the huts of his wives.
A description is given in the novel that will help to give you a picture of how to
design the compound (P.14). Include everything that is presented in the description
of Okonkwo’s compound. Consider the placement of objects and the colors that are
presented so that this can be a part of the picture. Draw and paint or color the
picture on a large sheet of white paper. You can also choose to create a model of
the compound with play-doh, etc. Be as creative as possible in making your
design. Label each object in Okonkwo’s compound.

Lifesized Egwugwu Mask with presentation of meaning
Project Name: Egwugwu Mask
Guiding Question: Who were the Eqwuqwu and how did their appearance
impact their influence?

Format: Create an egwugwu based on your own conception of a quality that you
feel is most necessary to being a judge. Apply concepts of the egwugwu and Ibo
culture to create your mask. You will design a mask representing your egwugwu
then decorate it with images and objects relevant to the quality it represents. You
will also write a one page description of your egwugwu and the rationale for each
of the designs or objects on it.

Details: 1. Re-read pages 87-94 and 186-191 to re mind yourself of how the
egwugwu carry out justice in the clan.

2. Think of a quality (for example, empathy) that you feel is most necessary for
any good judge to have. Sketch on paper a mask that you think your new egwugwu
would wear.

3. Visit HERE (Making a Paper Mask for Kids) - Link
and read how to do a mask. You may use another technique to make
your mask, but it should yield similar results and require similar effort.

4. Make your mask. You should be able to justify every design and object you affix
to your mask. In the novel’s setting, egwugwu masks were odd, frightening, and
other-worldly.
